Your First NA Meeting

It's okay to be nervous. Knowing what to expect can help. Here's exactly what happens at a typical NA meeting.

What happens at a meeting

🚪

Arriving

You walk in. No one will ask why you're there or what you've done. You might be greeted by a member who introduces themselves. Help yourself to coffee if there is any.

📖

Opening

A chairperson opens the meeting, usually by reading short passages from NA literature — including a welcome statement and the traditions of NA.

🗣️

Sharing

Members share their experiences, feelings, and progress. You are never required to share. If the chair asks if there are any newcomers, you can simply say your first name or stay quiet.

🤝

Fellowship

After the meeting closes, members often stay to talk, exchange phone numbers, and connect. This is a great time to ask questions or just listen.

🔒

What is shared stays private

Everything said inside a meeting is confidential. NA members do not repeat what they hear to anyone outside the group.

📄 Official introductory pamphlet

NA publishes a free pamphlet called “An Introduction to NA Meetings” that covers everything you need to know.

Common questions

Do I have to speak?

No. You are always welcome to just listen. Many people attend meetings for weeks or months before they feel ready to share.

Are there any fees or sign-ups?

None. NA meetings are completely free and open. You don't need to register, sign in, or commit to anything.

What if I'm still using?

You're still welcome. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop. Many people come to their first meeting while still in active addiction.

Will my information be shared?

No. Anonymity is a core principle of NA. What you hear in a meeting stays there.

Are NA meetings religious?

No. NA is spiritual in nature but is not affiliated with any religion. References to a 'Higher Power' are intentionally broad — you define what that means for you.

What if I don't like my first meeting?

NA meetings vary widely in size, format, and feel. If the first one doesn't click, try a different meeting. Many people try several before finding the right fit.

Ready to find a meeting?

There are no appointments, no sign-ups, and no fees. Just find a meeting near you and show up.
